Dear Andrea,

Thank you for an amusing and really informative read. It feels like you have just provided me with an insight to the secret 'Authors world' with a pinch of blunt, yet realistic advice thrown in for good measure.

I have found your advice really helpful and I look forward to my first attempt at getting published!

Thanks once again!

I am an absolute neophyte who really appreciates your witty information.

However, now that I am overwhelmed, I will put my 8 stories back in their box and wait awhile before I again consider getting them published.

I do love golfing.

Thanks, Linda

Hello Andrea,

I'm sure you get emails like this all the time but I really need some help. I have an interview / assessment centre this Friday and as part of the process I have to do an Fastrack test, which I believe is part of the SHL groups testing portfolio. The only problem is I can't find any examples of these type of test so I can practice.

Can you help. I'm just out to buy your book now but if you could point me in the right direction or even send me a sample Fatrack test or similar I would be eternally grateful.

Stuart

Hi Andrea

My friend and I are in the process of producing a childrens story/picture book (there is a second in the pipe line too) . My friend has written the story and I have illustrated. I know in your get published page you suggest not sending art work but the idea for us was to do something creative together. So my first question is will this hold us back if we want to stick with original art work and why?

You can send the story and the artwork, just make it clear you don't mind if they reject one half of the duo. Otherwise if they hate the artwork, the whole proposal will be rejected.

Dear Andrea,

Do you know, Chrissy T,    I believe it begins with an S.

Hello,

i have read the whole of you 'how to get published' and im now scared!

i'm 19 and i'm just finishing my first fantasy story. i have now learnt that i should send it everywhere and not hope for much, and even if someone does take an interest i will need other stories in the bank for them to invest in me.  i am planing other things, but when i feel pressured to write nothing comes out.

Thank you for your time!

I'm wondering, for my granddaughter, if writers of poems accepted by this site are compensated.

Oh dear - maybe you'd like to 'compensate' me towards the considerable costs of running this site. Seriously, publishers only pay authors if they make money from their work.

Hi Andrea,

I think your poem "Predictable" is great and would like my Year 1 class at Altrincham Preparatory School to recite it at our end-of-year prize giving event. Please could you let me know if this will be ok and how much we will have to pay. Thanks very much.

Liz Atkinson

On the other hand, I think I've been more than compensated by receiving this one.
PS I never charge anything, just quote me as author.

NAME: Phillipa Bayliss

Dear Andrea,

This 'page' has been bookmarked in my 'cheer-me-up' folder (I also write notes to myself with inspiring quotes for the much needed 'cheer-me-up' moments). It's so encouraging to read your words, and laugh over rejections - really! We all know we mustn't give up, it's not personal, etc, but they do eat away at your confidence and hope. I mean, what if my work IS rubbish? What if it NEVER attracks an agent or editor's interest? How many times is it 'normal' to be told "no thanks" (Yikes! Have I had more "no's" than normal?)... and so it goes.

I'm going to try to get hold of your books - I think you've made a fan of me, just by being approachable and encouraging! Thank you so much! I do apologise for rambling on (there's nothing better than a consoling fellow writer to open up to).

I wish you every success,

Phillipa, Canada

I would like your permission to use some of your poems with my class. After discovering your website I think my year 4s would love your poems, they would appeal to their humour.

I would like to print off the people and school poems so that they could use them to write poems in a similar style. I would like to use them on World Book Day.

Kewaigue School is a primary school on the Isle of Man, I've been teaching year 4 at the school for the last 10 years. I've found that some of the most memorable and enjoyable lessons for the children and myself have involved poetry.

Hello Andrea,

I am a primary school teacher at St Peter's School in Chippenham, England I'm about to do a class assembly and would like my children to perform some of your poems. We have been learning about Space and have just starter a literacy unit on performance poetry so it seems natural to combine the two.

I particularly like "Auntie Ethel the Extraterrestrial", "Black Holes" amd "Watch out". I am sure the children will enjoy performing them - with your permission!

Thanks, and best wishes,

Charlotte Wakefield.

Hi Andrea,

Hi Andrea,

I am completing a PGCE primary course in Bangor University in Wales and would like to ask if it would be possible to include your 'Advent Horizon' poem and 'Auntie Ethel the Extraterrestrial' poem in a poetry anthology for my english assignment. We are creating a teaching pack, which can be used to improve boy's reading abilities. I am basing my pack on science fiction and space and we have to include a number of poems on our theme in the pack as well as a fiction/non-fiction book, video and website. I really enjoyed reading the poems and would like to include the poems in my pack because they are humorous and I think boy's would enjoy reading them.

Hi Andrea
I have never written before but love reading and have some ideas about a screenplay script and a non-fiction book both aimed at adults. I found your practical tips and honest advice very helpful in getting me thinking seriously about what steps I need to take if I am going to take this seriously.

Sabrina Aries, Milton Keynes

I've just read through these gems on getting published and I all I can think of is it was pretty deflating and can't think how anyone got a book published ever. Not exactly encouraging. Would there really be no positives to pass on?   Karen Renshaw, Chesterfield

As I've mentioned before, I'm not trying to put people off writing, just being honest. To succeed you need to be really determined.

Good Morning Andrea,

Thank you for this web site, and all the wonderful points you mentioned. I feel I have learned a great deal already.

I wish to pass this particular poem on to some female colleagues who are all suffering with 'return to schoolitis' from their varied aged children.

Many thanks for making me smile!  Ann J Merritt

Hi Andrea -

I was bouncing around Roger Stevens' web site this afternoon which eventually led me to yours. Wonderful work and resources! You're one busy and very talented writer. And I very much enjoyed "What's in a Name?" in Paul Cookson's recent Dinosaur Poems anthology. (My own two in that collection are my first to be published on your side of the pond.)

Dear Ms. Shavick,

I would like to use your poem "Dumbo" in a lesson on scansion. I am a future teacher and this lesson is to be "taught" to my peers for my Direct Instruction practice lesson. I wanted a funny poem about teachers because I am trying to tie the lesson into "real life" and since we are going to (hopefully) be teachers, I thought it was perfect! My school is Gonzaga University and it is in Spokane, Washington.

What the hell are the publisher's problem? They sound like their on a total power trip? who the hell do they think they are? (unless your exagerating) do they actually accept any book? or are you trying to put people off writing?

I'm not trying to put people off writing, just being honest. No publisher is on a power trip - they just want to make money, like all businesses. And why not - if there were no publishers there would be no books.

NAME: Scott Chambers

Dear Andrea, I have just finished reading your "get published" page, and just thought I would drop you a little note to let you know that somebody out there appreciates the time that you have taken to help others. I have found myself with some spare time on my hands at the moment and have always wanted to write. Just never managed to get around to it. I am now considering finally buckling down and having a go during my new found freedom. I found your comments useful given my complete and utter inexperience!

Hi, im currently doing my teacher training at Edge Hill in Ormskirk, UK. Our current subject in school is poetry on certain themes, our first theme is school. If possible i would like the pupils to look on your website and find their favourite poem about school. They would then copy the poem, write their own sentence about why they liked the poem and then decorate it to go in our class anthology. We will hopefully be taking poems from a variety of different sources, using your website would allow the children to use I.T aswell. The anthology would not be getting published, it would just be a resource we would use in our classroom. Would this be ok for us to use one or more of your poems?

Thank you very much  Christina

Dear Andrea,

I would like permission to use two of your poems, "Predictable" and "Miss Picky" for a parent's meeting at our school next week, in Athenry, Co. Galway, Ireland.

Greetings!

Our Book Club for First and Second Graders is thinking about growing up! Next month, we'll be reading One Morning in Maine (McCloskey) and You'll Grow Soon, Alex.

Do you have any advice you can share on the topic or, even memories you have of being 6 or 7?Thanks in advance! We love your books!

Hello,

I just wanted to say that I found your article inspirational. I have lots of ideas for childrens books and more recently picture books (mostly while daydreaming at my desk) but have lacked direction for these ideas. I now have a plan:

1) Start writing ALL of my ideas down
2) Buy the Year book
3) Start sending out my ideas
Thanks for writing your guide, I really like the honesty and brief step-by-step approach that you have adopted. There is a lot of good karma coming your way!

Hi Andrea,

I have been thinking about trying to write for children for a wee while now. My own children are 7,5 and 3 and like me love their stories. They've all endured mummy's made-up characters and tall tales. I'm also a librarian and so am very familiar with what's on offer to children just now. I would love to issue one of my own books to our young readers! I guess I just need the push to sit down and put pen to paper and I found your advice on getting published refreshingly honest and indeed inspiring.

Thanks again for the no-nonsense info.

Nicola.    P.S. 'You'll soon grow Alex' is sitting in my son's bookcase and has been enjoyed many times!

Dear Andrea,

I came across your publishing advice whilst looking for websites relating to my daughter's reading scheme. Thanks so much for down to earth advice and humour...we live in South Africa (where thankfully most people appreciate the British sense of humour)and I'm looking to send a first manuscript off (it is in the filing cabinet!!!)  P.S. I love the bit about birthday candles,my daughter's friend went up in flames, thankfully no serious injury thanks to a quick thinking teacher and they DO still allow birthday candles in schools here!!

Hi Andrea,

A great site, well done. I will be coming back to your site for tips again. Kind regards.

Your advice is great and you are a terrific writer! Thank you for the information. I am considering writing teaching-related materials, not for children. More for other teachers and for parents. Good luck to you in your future endeavors!

Dear Andrea

Please may I use either Advent Horizon or How to Successfully Persuade Your Parents to Give You More Pocket Money to learn for my speech and drama exam? I hope I may because they are very funny.

Anyway thank you again for an interesting afternoon , and i really mean that too!!  Kindest regards Jacky King

Dear Andrea.

I thoroughly enjoyed your information on tips getting published. Andrew Reid

Dear Andrea

What a great website.
I recently had an idea for a picture book and I couldn't shake it off. With my job I spend long lonely hours in the car and this little story just kept popping up on a regular basis. I decided to write it down - if only to stop it rattling around my brain! I then thought about having it published so that other people could enjoy it. However, I have never done anything remotely like this before and looked to the internet for some guidance.

Your website has been so informative. I bought the book you suggested from Amazon and I am currently reading through that. Shortly, I am going to start sending my manuscript off. It may come to nothing but then again it may be taken up.......... who knows, you can but try.

You have given me very useful information on how to go about sending the manuscript off to publishers. So thank you and I will let you know if anything happens.

Regards, Sarah Phillips, Swansea

My 10 year old son Matthew has been given a poetry reading assignment at school. He chose your "Advent Horizon" poem to read to his class. I would therefore like to ask for permission for him to read this poem. Matthew is an avid Stargate and Star Trek (when it was on the past couple of years) viewer so this poem is very near and dear to his heart. Thanks, Becky Tutto, Indiana

Hey Andrea

Thanks so much for your tips on getting published, I have a few pieces sitting in my computer that i will be sending in!!

Hi, I just want to say that this site has inspired me in many ways. I'm just a teenager but I've been writing poems and short stories for quite a while and this site has helped me to discover the deeper meaning of what I'm writing or reading. Anne Fiore's poem "Sqeeze My Hand Twice" is my favorite because I can relate to it. Thanks Andrea for creating this site.

Hi Andrea

I've just read all your tips on writing children's books and now feel quite deflated. As a complete amateur I never realised it there was so much to think about. I am a young(ish) mother of two (3 year old and 14 months). My husband and I made up a character to teach our 3 year old son about the consequences of being naughty, not brushing teeth, running out into the road etc which proved very effective and fun at the same time. He does love them and so do cousins, friends etc. I am a Graphic designer and work closely with an illustrator and I am seriously thinking about developing this idea into picture books for 3 - 5 year olds. However, since reading your tips, I am thinking Oh my goodness! Am I just another unrealistic parent who think they can get a book published or is it worth putting in some real effort. I would appreciate your view. Kind regards

lots of tips for writers on the Get Published page. I wish there was an easy answer....but you never know

Hey there Andrea. As i was reading the poems posted on your site, i noticed something very upsetting. I took notice that 3/4 of them are sad stories about how they feel that they are outcasts of the world, being overshadowed by the people who they believe to be of "greater importance". I do feel great sympathy for those who deal with those issues but i feel that for every negative there is at least a positive as well. My advise: include poems that inspire young teens and assure them that they are not alone in the world. And if you decide to display thgis on your site this is my advise for all of those teens who wrote those poems: STAY POSITIVE! Life will reward you in the end. Ohhhh yeah, I attend Burlington City High School in Burlington New Jersey USA.

Dear Andrea,
Your book of "You'll Grow Soon Alex" was a really good book. It teaches you how to not care about what you look like in the outside, it matters if you grow in the inside. I'm a short one myself! I am about 51 inches and I am in the fourth grade! Sometimes people call me shorty. But I don't really mind. I am short, but those people in the inside are really tiny people. Those people who call me shorty are right. I am short I admit it. But I am always going to be a skyscraper in the inside.
Anyway, I have some qustions about the book. Why was Alex so short? Is it true that if you eat a lot of protein that you'll grow? Jazmin G.
P.S. Is there any more ways to get taller?

I wish I knew - I'm also quite short!

hi andrea im Evelyn for a long time ive been readind your paems and i really like them ! i write alot of poems depending on the mood im in but ive never published any of them i havnet told my parents either well i was just wondering how u stared your own web site later

I'm tall except my head doesn't hit the ceiling. Please reply soon!!!

Dear Mrs. Shavick,
I loved your book "You'll Grow Soon Alex"! Even though I'm like the tallest person in my class, I'm always trying to grow taller, even though the kid in the story didn't grow any taller. Anyway, I had some questions about your book, and one of them was; Can yo really grow taller by drinking milk???
Haley
Milk has a lot of protein but it probably won't make you any taller than you would be if you didn't drink it.

Dear Ms Shavick

My son, Finn (aged 8), has a poetry week at school next week. All children have been asked to recite a poem and we think your poem "Predictable" is fantastic and perfect for an 8 year old to learn and recite in front of the whole school - quite a test of his nerves! We'd be really grateful if you allowed us to use your poem and we will, of course, tell everyone where we found it. Finn is at Brookham School in Hampshire.

Many thanks and we look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Ms. Shavick,

I just read and interview done with you on the Word Pool. I really enjoyed what you had to say. I definitely concur with your thoughts on inspritation for writing children's books, the length it takes to write them, and revisions. I'm about to re-read one of my books to my wife and son before submitting it to Robin Wade for his consideration. Actually, I'll be sending him two mss. While I read to my family, I'll be revising some more, no doubt.

God bless you in your endeavors and future writing,

I like your poem Advent Horizon.
Would it be OK if I read it out in my school assembly please? We are doing space as our theme. I will say it's by you.   Thanks   Billie

Andrea,

Hello! Greetings from the Land of Morning Calm (South Korea). My name is Brett Clayton I am an EFL teacher working for the Incheon City Board of Education. I am currently drafting a curriculum for my school and would love to use a couple of your poems as material for an intonation lesson. The material is to be published only for students of our program. The poems I've selected are "Watching" and "Predictable". Would this be acceptable?

Take care, Brett Clayton

hi i would like to use the poem Grandma got eaten by a shark

Andrea, is the advent horizon poem from your hand?
As a hobby I'm making music and right now i'm making a space cd, for which we used this poem. Who can we mention as the author? maybe it is also nice to receive the result within 1/2 months.

Greeting Pieter from Holland

Hi, I am a Year 5 teacher at Auriol Junior School in Surrey and would very much like to use some of your space poems as part of our Literacy lessons. We are doing the over arching topic of 'Earth and Beyond' in Science, Geography, History and Art. We are trying to link our Literacy plan in as well and I am short of some poems about Space. If there is no fee. I intend to use them for the children to read and comprehend.
Many Thanks
Kirsty

Me and my friend really like your poems. We will probably only use one or two.

I would like to send a copy of your poem about the Victorian Ladies

Hello Andrea,

I wondered if you could help me further by giving me some quick advice?
I am keen to start writing basic children's books, aimed at the foundation stage/early years. I am also intending to illustrate myself.
Do I need to get several books together before approaching anyone?
Where do I start basically??

Kind Regards, Sam Rhodes

Hi Sam

No you do not need to write several books - I only started with one text. See the advice on my Get Published page (link on the top link bar). Also lots of advice on the web, do a search on 'getting published' or 'children's writing.' no easy answers it's very hard work indeed, good luck Andrea

Andrea Shavick,

My writier's workshop class was given an assignment to reach. We were allowed to pick any topic we liked. I picked superstition. In our project we have to included two or three poems on our topic. Your poems where humorous, and I was wondering if you would be willing to allow me to use them for my project? Thank you.

Hi Andrea. My name is Heather MacDonald. I am a grade 1 and 2 teacher in Mission, British Columbia, Canada. My class really enjoys Shel Silverstein poems because they are often so silly. I found your website through Ken Nesbitt's site. My class is just beginning a unit on space. Each week I write up one or two poems on large paper for my children to use for shared reading. I then copy the poem for them to include in their poetry duotangs. I would like to use your poeoms "Auntie Ethel the Extraterrestrial" and "Watch Out" for some of my poems this month.

I want to use some of your great poems because I have to memorize a poem for school and I love your homework poems so I am choosing yours. Tiffany Chow

yet i want to get paid for doing it can you help

bad news I'm afraid. no one ever made any money out of poetry. Poets usually write all sorts of other stuff - books, articles, stories etc, and they also run poetry workshops and give poetry readings in schools. Poetry itself is for fun, it doesn't pay well.

Hello ! I am a college student at a community college in NY. I would like to print and compare 5 or 6 of your poems for my Children's Literature class. Dear Miss,
I've found your site and decided to send several works of my students.
My name is Tzvetan Naydenov, I'm an EFL teacher in Primary School 'Petko R. Slaveikov' in Vratza, Bulgaria. We study English as a foreign language from 1st to 4th grade. My children like English and they try to write some poems and stories in English. I want to encourage them so I'm sending their works to you.
We celebrated Spring Day in Europe 2004 on March 23rd with the sound of Peace Bell in UN in New York. My pupils wrote several poems for peace. If you like their poems  and decide that some of them may be published in your site I will be very grateful (You've already published one of previously sent poems-Milvina's poem). It would motivate them to study much more and other students, too.
Sincerely yours,

hey andrea,
im an extremely large fan of your web-site, and i have read the poems about 10 times over, and i was hoping you could continue updateing them! i havnt read a new poem since like 2 months ago, and it says that it only takes like a week to get our poems on the web-site! and i have sent about 3 or 4 of my own poems as well, in hope that i can show my mates my work on your web-site! so please consider the poems i have sent in, my name is Anne Fiore from Perth Western Australia! continue the updates please, otherwise i will lose interest because i am bored of all the same poems! i love poetry, please dont make me lose contact with other teens that do too! thanks!

I have published your poem on the teenage poem page. I'm sorry it takes so long sometimes.

Dear Andrea,

I very much enjoyed reading your poems and wondered if you would give me permission to use "Advent Horizon" as a poem for children to act our at a performing arts holiday week. Our theme is "Space" and about 30 youngsters from 6-15 will be acting, singing, dancing and playing their little socks off at The Mick Jagger centre in Dartford, Kent, the week after Easter.

I look forward to hearing from you.
All the best

I'm a fifth grade teacher in Granby, CT - I would like to copy some of your poems (probably one from each category) for my "Pick a Pocket of Poetry" bulletin board. Basically, I fill pockets on the board with all kinds of poems - kids get to pick them, if they like it, then they copy it in a journal and, hopefully, try to find some of your books!

The poems stay in the room. Let me know if that's okay with you.

Thanks, Cynthia Gordon

I have read your current book on how to pass psychometric test. Are the tests in both books original tests or ammended tests? D. Constantine-Simms

The tests are original practice tests written by SHL Group plc (except for the combination test). You will not find these exact questions when you are tested, but very similar ones. I have not made any changes to the material. Taking my tests will help you because you'll have had some practice (and will have found out where your weaknesses are) and you'll be familiar with the format. If you try them under timed conditions you'll find the fear factor will be less too. Hope this helps. Andrea

Could I plesase use your moon poems, to share with my class. We're learning about the moon, the stars, and the planets, and i really wanted to read my students a few poems as examples, because they're going to have to make their own.

I found a poem on your website that I would love to include in my poetry notebook for elementary education. I am currently attending Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN. I am studying elementary ed. and we are required to compile a poetry notebook, I would greatly appreciate your permission to use "Miss Picky" in my notebook. The poem will be properly cited, so all who read it will be aware that you are the author.

Dear Andrea,

I got your book about Grandma and the Shark from the library this weekend and my 3-year old has insisted I read and re-read it over and over again. He wants to be a shark when he grows up!

MY SON NEEDS A POEM FOR SCHOOL. WE CHOOSE THESE POEMS , NOT SURE WHICH ONE HE WANTS TO USE. WE CHOOSE TIME TO GET OUT ANDTHINGS I DID FOR LUCK. HAVE YOUR POEMS BEEN PUBLISHED? WE NEED A POEM THAT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED.

"Teatime" of the Nasty Poems looks like a possible inspiration for Young Guest Poet Nicole's "Bugs." Speaking of the Nasties, I couldn't help but laugh about poor Hammy and the main course. I absolutely loved the History section, but it's a weakness of mine (the Victorian Era is of particular interest of mine, right down to the technical architectual aspect.). "I Want a Boy" is actually timeless in essence.

Well after having spent so much time here browsing I only thought it fair that I leave you some feedback! Enjoyed my visit. Take care.

Andrea, I am a physical education teacher in an elementary school in Michigan. I also teach human reproduction for our 4th & 5th grade girls. I am currently putting together our student handbook for the girls on this subject. The booklet we have used for several years is quite antiquated. I am in the process of re-typing it for a "fresh" look. I have been searching for pictures to add in the booklet and came across your Truth about Families." Would it be possible to use a few of your illustrations in our booklet for our young girls? The art work that is featured on the internet is wonderful!
Thanks for your response.

Andrea, I have enjoyed reading your information and would like to request permission to use a couple of your superstition poems in a workshop at a senior shared housing facility. Enjoyed your writing very much and think the seniors will be interested to hear about you and listen to your poems. we are in Montclair, N. J., USA.

Hi, my name is Angela Quinones. I am a student at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. I am going to school to become an elementary teacher, and right now I am working on a project for my Children's Literature class, and I could really use your help. The assignment is based on me doing a biographical paper on a popular children's poet, and I chose to do you. I was just wondering if you could tell me what made you get into writing children's poems, as well as what inspires your poems. I would greatly appreciate it if you could get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

Hi

I am a teacher of 10 year olds. It is the beginning of our school year, and i would like to use your poems in the school category to promote discussions of feelings about school and each other, as well as looking at some fantastic poems!

Dear Andrea Shavick

I am a Indian and I got a chance to read your book Landing Your First Job. Actually i am a member of British Council at Chennai. Thanks for your nice book which is helping to millions.
I have a doubt. Actually I am searching job and constantly I am facing one question as
"Reason for looking for a change in Job" and I am not getting the appropriate answer for that.
If you kindly give me the appropriate replay for this than i would be grateful to you.

Yours faithfully.
Mrutyunjaya Tripathy
Chennai

Dear Mrutyunjaya - "Why do you want to change your job?" can be hard to answer – you don’t want to admit to perhaps not getting on with your colleagues, hating your boss or anything else that might put a potential employer off. Acceptable reasons would be needing a greater challenge, wanting to work nearer to home, looking for more responsibility etc, but even these reasons are not enough by themselves. What you’re really being asked is, "Why do you want to work for me?" "Why do you want this particular job?" Find out as much as you can about the job and the company, then ask yourself honestly, "Do I still want this job?" "What are the advantages" "Why would I be good at it?" "Would I enjoy it?" "Why would this company benefit from me working for them" (the answers will, of course, be different for everyone and for every single job). Only then can you sound enthusiastic enough to convince an employer to take you on.

Andrea

Dear Andrea,

I have your book how to pass psychometric tests. Are the tests genuine practice tests that can be purchased from SHL or are they selected aspects of original tests?

Roy
Luton, UK

Dear Roy - both my books Passing Psychometric Tests and Psychometric Tests for Graduates are full of completely genuine SHL practice tests. They cannot be purchased from SHL, and even if they could, it would cost you considerably more than the £8.99 or so for my books.

No one is going to show you, or sell you, the exact psychometric test papers you’ll get (let's face it, if SHL did that they wouldn’t have much of a business left).

The bottom line is - don't worry about specific questions, take the practice tests, understand the format, bone up on areas you didn't do too well in (remember everyone has strengths and weaknesses so don't give yourself a hard time about it) and above all, feel confident for having had lots of practice.

now back to the mince pies - Andrea

Hi, i was wondering if i can chose one of your poems to present in front of my class. I was thiking about "Shool Report" or "Miss picky" I promise i will give you credit
because i didn't write the poems. I go to high school in canada ontario an all girl school.
Please and thank you

Magda

I really like your space poems and I was wondering if you would allow me to read them to a group of nursery children aged 3- 5 yrs. They are looking at various things related to space and I think your poems would add something to their project. Many thanks. PS They would not be copied except for me to read.

Morgan

Sure, use them for your project but please credit me as the author. If you want a personal reply next time, remember to type in your email address on the visitor comments form.

i think that ur poems need to be a little more sensitive cutting off heads and starving to death aren't exactly children related poems. thank you.

Children's literature is full of scary monsters, revolting relatives, wicked witches - just read Dahl, Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, Alice in Wonderland, practically every fairytale etc. My stuff's quite tame in comparison!

HI ANDREA I LOVE YOUR BOOKS AND YOUR POEMS I REALLY WHANT TO BE LIKE YOU I HAVE SOME POEMS BUT I REALLY DONT THINK THERE ANY GOOD WELL I LIVE IN VERNON TX 76384 AND I GO TO SCHOOL AT VERNON HIGH SCHOOLWELL I SEE YOU LATER

Dear Andrea,

I give English lessons once a week to primary school pupils in La Buisse (France), a village situated 25 km in the North of Grenoble. I was about looking for poems to teach to my pupils, but for something particular; and then I found your poems, which are quite special, amazing, strange, and very different from all other poems I read. So I wonder if it is possible to use some of your poems during my lessons. I am particularly interested by : - Predictable, - Something horrible, - Auntie Ethel the extraterrestrial

These poems are very rich concerning vocabulary, and I think that they are not at all boring to learn - such as other poems I used to learn when I was young.

I really would appreciated a positive answer and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely  Yours,
Simone ALLARD-JACQUIN

My name is Tiffany Godschalk I am a 13 year old and I am in 8th Grade, and attend Sayville Middle School.
Writing is my favourite thing to you...I had a great deal of websites and I saw yours and thought it was the best...
Tiffany Godschalk

Tiffany has a poem on the teenage poems page.

My son is in second grade and he will compete in his school Oral Language Competition Faire on December 15, 2003. His school name is John Ehrhardt Elementary, in Elk Grove, CA 95758. He needs to recite a humorous poem written by you, if possible. The poem needs to be 2 to 3 minutes long. Have you written a humorous poem that he could recite or if possible, could you please suggest one to him.

Cordially,
Esther Ubois

Hi I'm a student teacher and we've been asked to find a poem about space that we like and would be able to use with a class. I'd like to use your poem 'Advent Horizon' its to be used on a discussion board for the university and only people in my language class would have access to read it. Thanks

Jillian McLean

Greetings!

I'm taking a Young Adult Literature course for which we are required to read young adult novels of various genres - realism, historical, fantasy, biography, etc. For each genre we are to attach a poem that we feel is reflective of the genre. I read Carolyn Meyer's Mary, Bloody Mary for the historical genre assignment and thus was looking for a poem about King Henry VIII to include, thus the use of your poems "I Want a Boy" and "The Show" are perfect to accompany my paper about the book.

Thank you,

Lucretia Wallace

I am a student in college in Dubar, Wisconsin. I am in a children's literature class where we are doing a poetry program. I am doing mine on pets and wish to use your "I Haven't Got a Pet" poem as part of it. I thought it was so cute! Thank you!
Joy Williams

your poems are not bad and im into poetry but i get pissed off when i come to this site all it says is andrea's poems this and andreas poems that but i do like some...of your work

Well it is my website!  And I do have hundreds of poems on the site which are not written by me.

Andrea,
Wonderful poems!! I am a PGCE student (post grad teacher training) at Aberdeen University. Tomorrow I have to take in a favourite children's poem to a Literacy Workshop. Please could I use Miss Nits (I love limericks - they remind me of the fun I used to have making them up with my brother) or 'How to Successfully Persuade your Parents to give you More Pocket Money' as this reminds me of my own 3 boys and the puppy dog eyes routine we always go through whenever they want something!
With thanks

Hello Andrea,
I have been looking for 'Space' poems to use with my class of 9-10 year olds and came across your site. Would love to have your permission to read these to my class on 27/10/03 when we are having an Enrichment Day for Year 5. We are basing our work on 'Space' and the children will be involved in activities including art, poetry, music, cookery and ICT. The children will love your poetry. Please e mail me with your decision. Thanks.
Maggie Hewitson Yr 5 Leader

Dear Andrea,

Hello, my daughter has a biography paper about you due in school. We've been looking all over for information about you and were unable to find it. Would you please e-mail me back with a little background information on yourself? Where did you grow up? Are you married? Do you have children? Things like that.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,
Glory Ann Harnois

There's a picture on this web site at About Andrea, interviews on www.poetryzone.co.uk and www.wordpool.co.uk and you can get more info on my books by searching www.amazon.co.uk

Dear Andrea,

G'day from Australia. I need your help. I am a First Officer flying for Qantaslink (Regional) Airlines based in Cairns.  Early next year I'll be sitting a Psychometric Test with Qantas (International) and they use SHL for their exams. The Numerical, Abstract Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning in your book (Passing Psychometric Tests) is exactly the same as their test. I really need more exposure to these types of questions.  I'll definitely be buying your new book but I was wondering if you could help me get more questions to practice on. This is my dream job, I've spent hundreds of dollars on all sorts of books but yours is the exact exam type questions. Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Scotty Parker

You're right,  Passing Psychometric Tests is the only psychometric book which has genuine practice SHL tests. My new book Psychometric Tests for Graduates will be in the shops/internet stores by 1st November 2003. Although mainly aimed at graduates, many of the tests are extremely challenging and therefore good practice for anyone applying for a high level position. The book also includes practice tests for the SHL Scenarios, Fastrack and Brainstorm management tests, plus the OPQ 32. For more info click here.

In both books there are tips on improving your skills, and obviously you will want to read up on Quantas history/aviation stuff/ industry reporting/staff magazines/specialist papers etc you can read. Also ask them if they supply practice material, or past papers - some companies do so it's worth asking. Also see my career link page on my web site for some internet sites with more tests (but the number of good sites is few and far between).

You must also stop worrying. I know it’s easy for me to say that, but you sound pretty intelligent, you obviously have the right experience and are incredibly enthusiastic – 3 things I’m sure Quantas will be highly impressed by. Psychometric tests are only 1 tool used by recruiters, luckily the good old interview and gut feeling still play a major role.

HI Andrea,

Just found your website quite by accident really. Having looked at it, I feel inspired to perhaps do some freelance writing of my own. Where do I begin? Where do I get contacts for starting some small scale works? reviews perhaps, obviously I want to get paid, how much should I expect to earn? A lot of questions I know, but I wonder would you please spend a short while answering my queries and point me in the right direction?

Thanks - looking at your site makes me think I could do this too.

Meg Patel

I have added some 'get published' pages here to this site for all those of you who want to write stories, business stuff or poetry and need tips on how to begin. I will add more but there's quite a lot to be going on with.

I have read your poems and noticed the copyright. I would like to use your poem in my Year 2 class assembly on Thursday 23rd October as we are studying the Victorians. Thank you.

Some of your poems are very funny and I enjoyed reading them all. Actually was looking for back to school poems for displaying on one of the bulletin boards welcoming students .

Shamim

Hi Andrea,
just to let you know the children have finished their website and have added your poem with links to your site.

Thank you for letting us use the poem, it will go down really well on the site because Home Educated families are always going on about how their children no longer seem to get "Nits" now they're not at school :o)

Best Wishes

LOVED all your poems! Great fun! Especially the superstition poem about sleeping
with the wedding cake under the pillow to see the future husband - one to
avoid.

Also, many thanks for permission to show your poems to my new creative writing class. They
are BRILLIANT for children (and not just kids, I was really seeing themarvellous word pictures
which you so effortlessly paint!) and object lessons in how to write thought-provoking,
word-stretching and amusing poetry.

So thanks again.

Wow! As if you didn’t know, Lindsay Townsend is one of the UK’s most well-loved novelists, author of Chasing Rachel, Night of the Storm and Voices in the Dark. And she has her own web site http://www.lindsal.demon.co.uk/townsend/home.htm

When you write your poems do you express your feeling and doubt about your self and others you don't really care for a reason or can you write more of your poems so one of your biggst fans.

love one of your biggest fans,

When I write poetry, it's usually just for fun, not really for any reason, except to make children smile, or cringe, or shriek.....

Please write more poems and put them on your website. One of your biggest fans.

Actually I have recently added lots more of my poems - click here to see what there is.

Stella

As Stella is to Star and Athena a Greek goddess, what is the meaning of your name, Andrea?

The name Andrea means 'manly' in Italian - you see it's a boy's name in Italy. Hopefully I am not too manly! But one Italian name web site says people named Andrea are poetic, so that's nice to know.

Dear Andrea , I'd like to use your school poems for an anthology I am creating for our school (just our school!) I an a special needs teacher and work with boys with severe behavioural/emotional problems....they would like your poems !

Ms. Shavick,
I am a Elementary Education Student at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, PA and I have to do a poetry project for my language arts class.  I found that one of your poems Un-Stable Auntie would fit into my project and I would like permission to use it.  If you could get back to me as soon as possible it would be very helpful.
Thank you.

Yes I've given you a link - here and on the link page. Anyone else with a good poetry or author website, especially for kids, please contact me here and let me know if you want to swap links.

I would like permission to use "miss nits" on my children's website.
It's aimed at home educated children in the Uk and they are doing a page of funny poems about school and learning ..........we thought yours were great and would love to feature one if that's ok, we would of course add your name to it.

P.S  I love poetry and enjoyed reading them on your site, keep up the good work.

Hi Andrea, I am planning a poetry gallery for my 7th graders in Jessamine County in KY.
I am looking for poems about bullying and school violence since that is the service-learning project my students will be working with in language arts and through their writing this year. I found your poem "Report Card" and would like to add that to our gallery. Please let me know if I may as soon as possible. Also, if you have other ideas for working with bullying and school violence I would love to hear them.
Thanks, Sheena Roller

Hi,
I would like to ask you permission to use some of the poems to share with my students during our focused poetry session in our balanced literacy program. The students learn a poem by reading, chanting and illustrating it. It helps our ESL students. May we use your poems? I really enjoyed them.
P. Minjarez

Thank you for allowing us to share your poems. We are located in New Mexico the closest city is El Paso, TX. We are a rural community that borders Texas. Our school is in the Gadsden District in New Mexico. We are a dual language school and my students learn in English and Spanish. I have 18 students.
I will credit your work when  we share them in our focused poetry. Thank you again. Pat

Andrea,

I am in senior year at school and we have been asked to write a composition for Music. They have supplied us with some words which we could use, however they are not very good. We have been given permission to use other words, just as long as we correctly reference them if they are not our own. I would really like to use one of your poems for my song.

Sincerely,

Tiffany

Andrea - I'm introducing space poetry to to some kids in Calvert County Md. next week and want to use some of your excellent poems as examples to get them thinking - Naturally I would give you credit as author/poet. May I please?

Gary Lloyd

Andrea – thanks – from the bottom of my alien heart

Live long and write lots more poetry,

Gary

Hello Andrea,
I was having a quick browse through your poems and would love to use "Watch Out!" as a motivator for a handwriting lesson with my Year Fours- we are doing space at the moment and funnily enough they don't seem to think copying handwriting pages from a book is all that fun!
I was hoping to use it next week (first week of August) if I could- it would be wonderful to use!
Thanks

 Emily Moore

Andrea!

I am in New Zealand, and will be sitting the Saville and Holdsworth Numerical Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning tests in 2 days' time. I found out last week and quickly found and ordered your book on the net.  It arrived today and I have been into it with great enthusiasm tonight  - excellent book by the way - well done!.

Hi, I would like to use the poem called nature by Reece, 12, uk for stimulus in a jungle drama workshop I will be running next week and also possibly include it in a small showing of the work to parents.  The workshop is for 5 -7 year olds.    From Jill.

You can read Reece's poem on this page

I have been searching the net for a poem to use in a writing presentation to a group of teachers. Your poem "AUNTIE ETHEL THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL" is exactly what I need to teach the use of adjectives. It is quite different and I think it will be a big hit.
I am a teacher in Toronto, Canada and am taking a course to help me improve my teaching of reading and writing. Thanks for giving me permission to use your poem in my demonstration lesson. Take care,
Mila

You can read Auntie Ethel on the Andrea's poems page, and also in my book Grandma was Eaten by a Shark!

I love poems and I love reading! What's your fav. poem?

Hello!
I am an IB1 student in the American Int'l School of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In my English class we are writing poem anthologies. I have chosen to write about children. I really like your poem ' How to successfully persuade your parents to give you more pocket money'. i was wondering if I could add it to my list of poems. I will source and site where i have gotten it from. My anthology is due on the 26th of april, 2003 so if you could please reply before then, that would be great! Thanking you very much!

Dear Andrea,

Would you mind if I memorized and recited "Miss Nits" for my 3rd grade class? I really like it. I hope my teacher does too.

Thank you. Eric Nieman in Carlsbad, CA.

Hi,

I work with an organization called the NJ Orators in which we teach children how to be good orators. We use literature, poems, short stories, etc.

Our format is to have the child introduce him/her self. Tell what they are presenting, who it is by, why they selected the piece and any other information they may have on the author. Then they present the piece using the techniques learned during the semester.

Your poems are simple enough for out children to memorize and because of the content, it is easier for them to relate to the subject manner.

Please let me know if it is ok for us to recite your poems

I love "Watching", I don't think it's particularly original but I am all for
"re-mystifying" what science has de-mystified! It is a beautiful poem!
"Auntie Janet" I really like, and "Unstable Auntie" (it seems you like, or
rather dislike, Aunts too!); the latter is up my and I love the naughty line that
she should be "like other cows" - I don't think kids should miss out on that
for the sake of an Aunt being called a "cow"! "Bad Boy" is great, and
visually interesting - I love the shifting of gears up and down, the change
in pace! And the title piece from your recent book was also a great read -
the line "I was very upset about that!" (speaking of the dog being eaten by
the catfish - that whole reversal works really well!!!) is wonderful!

Richard Yates from Essex

Hi--I wanted to use "How To Successfully Persuade Your Parents..." for my English class next week. We are to provide a poem for children to share with other future teachers. I found you online, really enjoyed the way the poem was written, and printed a copy to bring to class. Is that okay?---Yolie, Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi.

I just visited the Young Guest Poet Page - it's perfect!!
Of course, the "new poetry star in the making" bit made me
smile and laugh at the same time. It feels superb.
You made my day! Thank you.

--- Nicole

Hello Andrea! I was recently assigned to make a poetry packet of an author
of my choice. I was to take a few selected poems that interested me, and
explicate a few, while having others comment on several. Even though I am
in 10th grade honors English, I really enjoyed your poems (for younger
children.) They were both cute and funny, and they reminded me of when I
was an 'innocent youth.' My favorite poem was "How To Successfully Persuade
Your Parents To Give You More Pocket Money." I know I do all of those
things described, and I'm going to try the easier method from now on. Then
when my mother says no, at least she won't be upset with me for begging and
complaining! Anyway, we were supposed to ask if our poet would be willing
to come and read poetry at some point. I know that wouldn't be an easy
thing to do, because we are in high school, and your the poetry that I read
deals primarily with younger children, which is okay. I'm just happy to
have had the chance to be able to at least E-mail you and thank you for
writing refreshing poetry that I don't have to read over 10 times before I
understand the meaning of it!

Keep up the good work :)

Yours Truly,
Angela Matula

p.s. I also enjoyed the Auntie Janet poem about the peanut butter sandwich.
My favorite childish food is peanut butter, so that made me laugh...out
loud!

Your site looks fabulous.
