CAREER BOOK REVIEW PAGE

This page contains feedback, questions and comments from readers about my 4 psychometric test books, namely: Passing Psychometric Tests, Psychometric Tests for Graduates, Practice Psychometric Tests, Management-Level Psychometric & Assessment Tests,  and also Landing Your First Job. To send your feedback or question click here.

Hello Andrea,

I have just finished your "Management Level Psychometric & Assessment Tests". I think its brilliant! I'd highly recommend it to anyone trying to appear in Psychometric tests at any level.

I look forward to another book with more practice questions similar to these.

Reeta Sood

Dear Andrea,
I have just found 'Psychometric Tests for Graduates' to be very useful, thank you. Am off to by the practice book now! Many thanks,
Thomas Kingston

Gday from Australia.
I am applying to the Qantas Cadet Pilot Training Program. It is highly competitive; with as less than 1 in 30 people making it in. The stage 2 testing which Qantas uses is provided by shl. The psych encompasses; a verbal critical reasoning test; numerical critical reasoning, spatial and diagrammatic tests.

I've bought all your books and find them to be obviously the most precise and similar. However; once again; there simply aren't enough questions to adequately practice; because practice makes perfect. Would you be able to provide me with more questions from shl? thanks in advance  Andy

No, I can’t get any more tests from shl at the moment. I assume you have my management book which does contain some very hard tests, especially the diagrammatic (which incidentally are usually used for IT people, not pilots – unless you’re supposed to repair the plane’s computer in mid flight!). Anyway, assuming you do ok on the tests, I do have to tell you that other aspects of the recruitment biz are just as important - confidence, friendliness, ability to work calmly under stress, memory, health, ability to have a laugh at the interview, having genuine answers to why you want the job etc. For example, how much do you really know about the airline industry? Try reading magazines & journals on industry news &  aerospace engineering. Have you flown with them and how did they compare with other carriers? Are you aware of the downside of flying? It’s probably nowhere near as glamorous as you think and you might need to demonstrate that you are being realistic (because no company will spend time & money training somebody who they think might leave). Andrea

I recently purchased your book "Management Level Psychometric & Assessment Tests" and so far I very much enjoy reading it!  Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou

Andrea    (re Psychometric Tests for Graduates)

Thank you again for an informative book on the different tests. There is a large discrepancy in the standard of books available but yours is definitely one of the best I have used. I have just ordered a copy of your Management Level Psychometric & Assessment Tests and look forward to using this and more of your books at future stages of my career.

Kind regards

Psychometric Tests for Graduates - A bargain price for so many tests and information. I needed some practice with the psychometric tests - this book has it all. Loads of tests, all different types of test, and information on which tests for which type of job. And the SHL tests are the real thing. It's also quite an entertaining read which is a first for a career book - especially the chapter on how to avoid psychometric tests!  (Bookloans.co.uk)

Passing Psychometric Tests - I think your book is really useful practice and have enjoyed it
immensely.

Dear Andrea Shavick
I am a Indian and I got a chance to read your book Landing Your First Job. Thanks for your nice book which is helping to millions. I have a doubt. Actually I am searching job and constantly I am facing one question as
"Reason for looking for a change in Job" and I am not getting the appropriate answer for that.
If you kindly give me the appropriate replay for this than i would be grateful to you.
Yours faithfully.
Mrutyunjaya Tripathy, Chennai

Dear Mrutyunjaya - "Why do you want to change your job?" can be hard to answer – you don’t want to admit to perhaps not getting on with your colleagues, hating your boss or anything else that might put a potential employer off. Acceptable reasons would be needing a greater challenge, wanting to work nearer to home, looking for more responsibility etc, but even these reasons are not enough by themselves. What you’re really being asked is, "Why do you want to work for me?" "Why do you want this particular job?" Find out as much as you can about the job and the company, then ask yourself honestly, "Do I still want this job?" "What are the advantages" "Why would I be good at it?" "Would I enjoy it?" "Why would this company benefit from me working for them" (the answers will, of course, be different for everyone and for every single job). Only then can you sound enthusiastic enough to convince an employer to take you on. - Andrea

Dear Andrea,

I have your book how to pass psychometric tests. Are the tests genuine practice tests that can be purchased from SHL or are they selected aspects of original tests?

Roy
Luton, UK

Dear Roy - all my psychometric books contain only genuine SHL practice tests. They cannot be purchased from SHL, and even if they could, it would cost you considerably more than the £8.99 or so for my books.

No one is going to show you, or sell you, the exact psychometric test papers you’ll get (let's face it, if SHL did that they wouldn’t have much of a business left).

The bottom line is - don't worry about specific questions, take the practice tests, understand the format, bone up on areas you didn't do too well in (remember everyone has strengths and weaknesses so don't give yourself a hard time about it) and above all, feel confident for having had lots of practice. Andrea

Dear Andrea,

G'day from Australia. I need your help. I am a First Officer flying for Qantaslink (Regional) Airlines based in Cairns.  Early next year I'll be sitting a Psychometric Test with Qantas (International) and they use SHL for their exams. The Numerical, Abstract Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning in your book (Passing Psychometric Tests) is exactly the same as their test. I really need more exposure to these types of questions.  I'll definitely be buying your new book but I was wondering if you could help me get more questions to practice on. This is my dream job, I've spent hundreds of dollars on all sorts of books but yours is the exact exam type questions. Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Scotty Parker

You're right,  Passing Psychometric Tests is the only psychometric book which has genuine practice SHL tests. My new book Psychometric Tests for Graduates will be in the shops/internet stores by November 2003. Although mainly aimed at graduates, many of the tests are extremely challenging and therefore good practice for anyone applying for a high level position. The book also includes practice tests for the SHL Scenarios, Fastrack and Brainstorm management tests, plus the OPQ 32. For more info click here.

In both books there are tips on improving your skills, and obviously you will want to read up on Quantas history/aviation stuff/ industry reporting/staff magazines/specialist papers etc you can read. Also ask them if they supply practice material, or past papers - some companies do so it's worth asking. Also see my career link page on my web site for some internet sites with more tests (but the number of good sites is few and far between).

You must also stop worrying. I know it’s easy for me to say that, but you sound pretty intelligent, you obviously have the right experience and are incredibly enthusiastic – 3 things I’m sure Quantas will be highly impressed by. Psychometric tests are only 1 tool used by recruiters, luckily the good old interview and gut feeling still play a major role.

Andrea!

I am in New Zealand, and will be sitting the Saville and Holdsworth Numerical Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning tests in 2 days' time. I found out last week and quickly found and ordered your book on the net.  It arrived today and I have been into it with great enthusiasm tonight  - excellent book by the way - well done!.
